Airport conquest series. Matsumoto Airport and Niigata Airport in a single day. Although Matsumoto and Niigata are relatively close in a straight line, there’s no direct air route between them. By connecting two JAL flights — Matsumoto → Itami → Niigata — I covered both airports in one day.

The full series index is here.

Route Design

Matsumoto Airport has very few scheduled flights. At the time, JAL operated a summer-only Itami route. I used this to fly to Itami, then connected to a Niigata flight. The return was by Jōetsu Shinkansen from Niigata to Tokyo.

The biggest risk in this plan is the Itami connection. Arrival from Matsumoto at 13:55, departure to Niigata at 14:20 — only 25 minutes. If the Matsumoto flight is delayed, the Niigata flight is missed.

Matsumoto Airport is the highest-elevation airport in Japan with scheduled service. The summer-only Itami flight has limited availability, so I timed the visit to this season.

Shinjuku to Matsumoto

The Limited Express Azusa is all-reserved seating, but I couldn’t secure a seat on short notice and boarded with a standing ticket. A seat opened up around Kōfu and I could sit down, but I stood until then.

Time at Matsumoto Station

I spent time at Alpico Plaza near Matsumoto Station. Airport bus frequency is limited, so the schedule revolves around the bus departure time.

25-Minute Connection at Itami

Matsumoto flight arriving at 13:55, Niigata flight departing at 14:20. A 25-minute connection. This meets Itami Airport’s minimum connection time, so it’s a legitimate routing for JAL connections. However, there’s no margin — a delay on the Matsumoto flight would mean missing the Niigata flight. This time, the arrival was on schedule and the connection went smoothly.

Niigata Airport to Niigata Station

Limousine bus from the airport toward Niigata Station. At the Bandai City Bus Center, I ate the famous “Bus Center Curry” at the stand-up soba shop inside. It’s a curry with a distinctive yellow roux, well-known among locals.

Then I took the Jōetsu Shinkansen back to Tokyo.
