Airport conquest series. The San’in region has four airports: Yonago, Izumo, Tottori, and the island airport of Oki. This is a paper plan to cover all four in two days. In practice, I visited them on separate occasions due to scheduling, but this route would be the most efficient way to conquer all four together.
The full series index is here.
Route Design
Of the four airports, only Oki is on an island, accessible only by ferry or flight. From Oki Airport, flights go only to Izumo and Itami, so connecting Oki → Izumo by air is the natural choice.
Building around this: Day 1, fly to Yonago, take the ferry from Sakaiminato to Oki, and stay overnight. Day 2, fly from Oki to Izumo, then JR San’in Main Line to Tottori, and fly back to Haneda.
It’s possible to do a quick airport touch at Oki (ferry in, fly out, or vice versa), but since it’s a remote island, the plan includes one night.
Four modes of transport are used: plane, ferry, JR, and walking.
Itinerary (based on May 2022 timetables)
Day 1: Haneda → Yonago → Sakaiminato → Oki (overnight)
Day 2: Oki → Izumo → Tottori → Haneda
Timetables are subject to change. Check the latest schedules before traveling.
Three Hours in Sakaiminato
Arriving at Sakaiminato Station at 11:18, the ferry departs at 14:25 — about three hours. From the station, Mizuki Shigeru Road extends into town (a shopping street lined with bronze statues of yōkai from “GeGeGe no Kitarō”). Plenty of time for a stroll and a meal.
Walking from Tottori Daigaku-mae Station to Tottori Airport
Tottori Airport has a shuttle bus from Tottori Station, but Tottori Daigaku-mae Station on the JR San’in Main Line is about 1.5 km (~20 minutes on foot) from the airport. Walking saves the bus fare. The plan is to eat at “Ringo no Ki” near the station before heading to the airport.
Walking from Yonago Airport to Yonago Airport Station
Yonago Airport is adjacent to Yonago Airport Station on the JR Sakai Line — about 10 minutes on foot. Being able to walk directly from an airport to a rail station is unusually good access for a regional airport.
